Chemical peels can help even out overall skin tone by removing darkened areas of tissue and stimulating the growth of new tissue. Until recently, most peel acids were suitable only for lighter skin tones, meaning those with a high amount of melanin were not suitable candidates for this procedure. However, modern peel acids come in many forms. Chemical peels are one of our most recommended treatments for reducing the appearance of certain types of scars, age spots and other regions of hyperpigmentation.
Different Types of Chemical Peels
A superficial peel uses a mild acid. These peels don’t penetrate deeply through the skin. Only the epidermis is affected, and this layer slowly dries up and flakes away. Recovery time is minimal with this type of peel. Medium-depth and deep chemical peels use stronger acids. Recovery time tends to be longer, but the results are more dramatic.
What to Expect During a Chemical Peel Treatment
After we consult with the client, we will determine the best peel treatment for reducing the appearance of their dark spots and hyperpigmentation. This will vary from one individual to another. We may give the client a checklist to follow so that they can perform the proper cleansing procedures in the days leading up to the peel treatment.
During the actual treatment, we cleanse the face thoroughly and then apply the solution. After a set amount of time, we wash the solution off and cleanse the skin once more. If aftercare steps are necessary, we will be sure to provide you with special instructions regarding proper care.
Chemical peels ultimately remove the dead, damaged layer of skin and stimulate the growth of new, healthier skin. The result is glowing skin that is smoother and shows less signs of aging or sun damage. The appearance of dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles, acne and scars will be minimized.
