What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a type of skin rejuvenation that is sometimes also called a laser peel. Like a chemical peel, it exfoliates the outermost layers of the skin to unveil healthy new skin. The heat from the laser also stimulates the production of new skin cells and collagen to produce tauter and more youthful-looking skin. Laser skin resurfacing can help patients with acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, or uneven skin tone. Depending on the size of the treatment area and the type of laser used, a session can take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. The recovery time is also affected by both the size of the treatment area and the type of laser used.

What is the ProFractional Laser?

The ProFractional laser, made by the company Sciton, is the laser used in skin resurfacing treatments. Rather than removing entire layers of skin, it removes only parts of them. That reduces both side effects like reddened skin and the recovery time. A client who gets treated with a ProFractional laser may return to work or school within days rather than a week or two.

The ProFractional laser creates “microchannels” in the skin. The body treats the microchannels as if they were wounds and triggers the healing process. The heat from the laser also stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells. The ProFractional laser is also adjustable. The dermatologist can, therefore, use it to control the depth of the microchannels. They can affect only the epidermis, or they can go deep into the dermis. The ProFractional laser can be used on the face, hands, chest, and neck, and it is safe for most skin types.

Before starting the treatment, the doctor will cleanse the patient’s skin and give them protective eyewear. The patient will hear some quick snapping noises while the laser is being used. Immediately after treatment, the patient’s skin will be reddened as if they had a mild sunburn. The patient’s skin will be unusually sensitive to ultraviolet light, so they should avoid sunlight for a time. They should wear sunscreen if they need to go outside. The patient may resume their usual routine about a day or two after treatment.
