Eliminate Spider Veins with Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a type of procedure used in the treatment of spider veins. During this procedure, a sterile solution is injected into the veins. The vein lining is affected by this solution, which causes it to collapse and eventually disappear.
Spider veins are most often seen in women who are between 30 to 50 years old. The condition seems to be related to pregnancy and the hormone estrogen. Spider veins got the name because they resemble a circular network pattern. These purple veins normally form a lattice pattern and, although unsightly, are quite harmless.
The cause of spider veins is not completely understood. They seem to run in families in some cases. Their development may also be related to pregnancy, the birth control pill and hormone therapy.
Sclerotherapy is performed at our doctor’s office and does not require the use of anesthesia. The spider veins are located and injected with a solution that affects the vein. Only minimal discomfort is involved.
Number of Treatments Required
The number of sclerotherapy treatments necessary will vary from person to person, but normally two to four treatments are needed for optimum results. In milder cases, anywhere from one to two treatments is usually enough. More treatments are required when veins are slightly larger or when more veins are involved.
What Happens When Spider Veins Are Left Untreated?
Nothing will happen if they go untreated because most spider veins are only a cosmetic concern. They do not cause blood clots, do not lead to swollen feet and do not cause pain.
Can Anyone Have Sclerotherapy?
Almost anyone can undergo sclerotherapy to remove spider veins, although women who are pregnant or nursing cannot. Your candidacy for this type of treatment will ultimately be determined during a consultation at our office in Oklahoma City.
How Long Before I Notice Results?
The spider vein will be absorbed over the following two to four weeks and become invisible. In some cases, a particular blood vessel will require multiple injections based upon its size. Multiple spider veins may be treated during a single treatment session.
What Can I Expect After Sclerotherapy?
You may experience some mild discomfort that can be easily alleviated using Tylenol. After about two days, you may resume your daily activities.
