Sclerotherapy for Non-Surgical Spider Vein Treatment
Spider vein is another name for a thread vein. Spider veins are tiny blood vessels that run close to the surface of the skin. They may look red, blue or purple, which is one reason why they are referred to as broken veins. However, they are not actually broken, they are just enlarged. Telangiectasia is the medical term for spider veins. Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical spider vein treatment that can dramatically improve their appearance or completely remove them.
Considered the treatment of choice for spider veins, sclerotherapy is minimally-invasive and may reduce related symptoms, such as burning and aching as well as night cramps. The treated veins may fade a few weeks after treatment, but it takes up to two months in some cases. In severe cases, multiple treatment sessions may be needed.
Sclerotherapy is performed in-office by our specialist. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the treatment may take from 15 minutes to one hour. It does not require anesthesia. Our specialist simply injects a solution into the problematic vein. The solution will irritate the lining of the vein so it will gradually close and block the flow of blood. When the vein is closed, the blood will naturally flow through a healthy vein.
During a consultation with our specialist, you can learn more about sclerotherapy and if it is the best spider vein treatment for your situation. You may have a medical exam and be asked if you are pregnant, are taking oral contraceptives or smoke. If so, it may be recommended to wait until you deliver, quit smoking or stop taking birth control pills. You may also be asked if you are taking prescription or over-the-counter medication or if you have any allergies.
After the procedure, you may be asked to walk around. This movement will help to avoid blood clots and will maximize the treatment’s results. You may be asked to wear compression stockings for a few weeks after the treatment to maintain pressure on the treated area. It is recommended to avoid exposure to the sun for at least two weeks after treatment. However, you can go back to work or daily activities immediately.
Spider veins in the legs are usually a cosmetic problem, but they can cause itching and burning as well. You may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy if you have thread veins on your thighs and lower legs or if you have red or purple veins on your face that you use makeup to conceal.
