How Common Is Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia After CoolSculpting?

Since CoolSculpting hit the market and it got FDA approval, people have started loving it for unwanted fat removal in a minimally invasive way. It freezes the stubborn fat under the skin and the lymphatic system of the body releases the fat. There is no need of surgery and no downtime. You can resume your work soon after the process. All these benefits have made this process immensely popular among the patients.

Though this process is no doubt safe and has minimal side effects considerably, still if you leave yourself on inexperienced hands, there could be issues. Typically, patients get mild redness, numbness, tingling on the surface and it goes away within a few days.

Now, if you are unlucky and get this done by inexperienced and inefficient professionals you may get “paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)” or commonly known as ‘stick of butter’ effect.

WHAT IS PARADOXICAL ADIPOSE HYPERPLASIA (PAH)?

“Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)” is a rare and adverse effect of CoolSculpting or Cryolipolysis. This fat reduction process uses a cooling effect to freeze the cells underneath the skin and it also destroys the subcutaneous fat cells. It does not damage the skin but reduce the fat amount from the treated area. 0.00051% of people among 1.5 million get this rare disorder on their skin as a side effect of CoolSculpting.

The PAH gradually enlarges the area. When the cell freezing or the stimulus kicks in a reactionary process in the fat cells, they start to thicken up. As a result the fat cells start to expand instead of breaking down and allowing the body to remove them. The PAH is only a side effect that comes up after doing CoolScculpting or Cryolipolysis. This cannot be confirmed within the first six months of the fat removal process.

PAH FREQUENCY

This cannot be said whether a patient will get this side effect. Previously it was seen in 1 patient among 4000 treatments. Now the ratio is 1:138. Still the occurrence is less than 1% among the patients but the physicians and doctors are paying close attention to it.
